Third Grade Creates Cartouches

In Ms. Petty's class, the third graders had a fun and creative activity where they used air-dry clay to make cartouches with their names written in Egyptian hieroglyphics. First, they learned about the ancient Egyptian tradition of cartouches, which were oval-shaped frames that protected royal names. Each student rolled out a piece of clay and shaped it into a smooth, oval form. Then, they used tools to carve their names into the clay, turning each letter into its corresponding hieroglyph. Once their cartouches were finished, the students set them aside to dry, and they were excited to see their work come to life as they learned about history and practiced their art skills at the same time.
