Celebrating Student Achievements in Safety Education
This week, students at Yorktown Elementary had much to celebrate as they marked the conclusion of two important learning units focused on safety and community awareness.
Fourth graders proudly graduated from their D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program under the guidance of Deputy Holliday from the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office. The program, which emphasizes good decision-making and resistance to peer pressure, culminated in a ceremony where students received certificates and shared reflections on what they learned.
Meanwhile, second graders wrapped up their fire safety unit with a hands-on experience led by local fire officials. The unit emphasized critical lessons about smoke alarms, escape plans, and emergency preparedness—knowledge that could one day save lives.
Our connection with the sheriff’s office and fire department helps reinforce real-world learning in powerful ways. Students not only gain essential safety knowledge, but also see firsthand how community helpers work to protect and support them.
Through programs like D.A.R.E. and fire safety education, Yorktown Elementary continues to strengthen its commitment to whole-child development and community collaboration.
