What an incredible day here on Siege Lane! Today we had the joy of celebrating Ms. April Insley—our YCSD Teacher of the Year—who has also been named the 2027 Virginia Region 2 Teacher of the Year by the Virginia Department of Education. This well-deserved honor was made even more meaningful as it was announced on her birthday.

This afternoon, YCSD leaders, alongside VDOE staff, surprised Ms. Insley with the exciting news during an assembly at Yorktown Elementary School. It was a truly memorable moment, as students and staff came together to celebrate her in a way she will never forget.

As a dedicated library media specialist, Ms. Insley was selected from an outstanding group of Teachers of the Year representing 16 school divisions across the Tidewater Region 2. She now advances as one of eight finalists for Virginia Teacher of the Year.

We are incredibly grateful to have Ms. Insley as part of our school community. Her passion, leadership, and unwavering commitment to students inspire us all. She exemplifies excellence in education, and we are so proud to celebrate this remarkable and well-earned recognition.

🌿🦋 A Wonderful New Chapter Begins at Yorktown Elementary! 🦋🌿

Today, we celebrated the ribbon cutting of Yorktown Elementary School’s Trail of Wonders—a space designed to inspire curiosity, exploration, and a love for nature. ✂️🌱

Joined by students, staff, families, and school board members, this new trail will serve as an outdoor classroom and a place where monarch butterflies can visit and pollinate.

We’re grateful for our partnership with the 4-H Schoolyard Habitats outreach program for helping bring this vision to life and supporting hands-on environmental learning.

The Trail of Wonders is a path to discovery, and we can’t wait to see our students grow along the way! 💚🌼

Today was one for the books! We may have told you it was “prom day” and had you thinking you needed to show up in your best prom dress… but little did you know, the real celebration was all about YOU!

Walking in and seeing the entire staff dressed just like you was the perfect way to celebrate someone who leaves such a lasting impression on all of us every single day. Your style, your leadership, your heart for our school — it’s something we admire, appreciate, and (clearly!) love to replicate. 😊

Thank you for being the kind of principal who makes our school feel like family. We hope today made you feel as special as you truly are.

Mark your calendars for Literacy Under the Lights on April 20th from 5:00–7:00 PM at Bailey Field (behind York High School)! 📚 Families from YES, SES, YMS, YHS, and DES will come together for a special community-wide event celebrating our love of literacy under the lights. Bring a blanket and find a cozy spot on the football field to read and enjoy free books together. We’ll also have food trucks and community partners joining in the fun. We can’t wait to see our families come together for this exciting evening! 🦅

Join us at YES on April 16th from 5:30–7:00 for A Night of Art! 🎨 Our Falcons’ artwork will be on display, along with demonstrations from local artists, face painting, card making, and balloon animals. Mrs. Gilbert has been working hard to create a special event that showcases our students’ creativity for all to enjoy. You won’t want to miss this exciting new event! ✨

Join us on March 28th at 10:00 AM for a fun-filled community egg hunt! We’re excited to partner with YHS for this special event, taking place at The Woods of Yorktown (2801 Old Williamsburg Road) The fun begins at 10:00 and will continue until all the eggs are gone—so don’t be late! 🐣

The School Board has approved adjusting Tuesday, April 21, to a student holiday/staff workday due to the special election.

Yorktown Elementary welcomed several special guest readers today from our School Board office, including our Coordinator of Science, Mrs. Veronica Warwick; Manager of System Administration, Mr. Ronald Finch; and Associate Director of Student Services, Mr. Brian Fries. Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedules to read with our little Falcons—we truly appreciate your visit! 📚🦅

Second grade families at YES joined us for our very first Lunch & Learn on March 4th! Families enjoyed lunch together while learning fun and helpful ways to support their child’s spelling and reading fluency at home. Our Reading Team shared easy strategies for decoding multisyllabic words and building strong reading skills.

Our Falcon Families had a great time participating in the activities together and went home with free books, a two-syllable decoding game, and helpful resources for tackling big words. It was a fun and engaging time for everyone! 📚🦅✨
